Faking it: “The Hills” co-stars say Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag are not really separated

Ever since a publicist for Heidi Montag confirmed for the media that she and husband Spencer Pratt were taking some time off and were separated (but not yet divorcing), talk as to whether they were faking it for publicity did not cease to make the rounds. As People magazine puts it, not even friends and co-stars believe the breakup is real.

The other day, word got out that the lease to what is meant to be Heidi’s new house was signed only two days before the breakup was announced and that it wasn’t even in her name. For many, this was the closest thing to a confirmation that the two had come up with this plan only in order to generate media for whatever projects they may have to promote next. As it turns out, people who worked with the two reality stars incline to believe the same.

“For those losing sleep over Speidi’s [Spencer and Heidi] separation, the joke may be on you. Several of Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt’s Hills castmates say the duo’s breakup is just another one of their publicity stunts. ‘I think it’s a joke,’ Audrina Patridge told People at the MTV Movie Awards in L.A. Sunday. ‘I don’t believe it. They’re inseparable and in love.’ Also questioning the validity of the split is Hills-turned-City gal Whitney Port. ‘I doubt they’re really broken up,’ she said. ‘I’m sure they’re still sticking together’,” People writes.

The separation may have been orchestrated also in order to convince “The Hills” producers to bring them back on the show. “While there’s no official word on whether or not the Pratts will return to The Hills for the final episodes, costar Lo Bosworth thinks Montag and Pratt are hoping a sham split gives them more tube time. ‘I don’t buy it,’ [Port] said. ‘I’ve worked with them for too long, and they haven’t been filming, so I think this is a way they think they can get back on the show for the last few episodes’,” People further writes.

At the same time, the so-called breakup could also serve to bring more press to Heidi’s upcoming reality show, which focuses on her post-Spencer life, living with a female friend. Clearly, such a show could not have been possible if the two were still together.
