One of the most powerful mobile phones that run under Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating system is the Toshiba TG01, based on a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. Released only a few months ago on the market, the handset has had the Windows Mobile 6.1 platform on board until now, when its maker made available both an update for the most recent flavor of the OS as well as a new version of TG01, one that has WM 6.5 right from the start.

The Toshiba TG01 can already be purchased in various European countries, and Toshiba has just posted a free upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.5 on its European website. Here's what the company says about the solution: “This new software will make your current TG01 a Windows phone, running Windows Mobile 6.5. This will give you access to the Microsoft Marketplace applications store and My Phone, together with a choice of home screens.”

According to the company, users will also have to ensure that their handset meets certain requirements before proceeding with the update, namely, that the battery is fully charged, or that the update is necessary. In order to check whether the update applies, one should go to Start > Settings > System > About > Version, where they will learn whether the handset runs under Windows Mobile 6.5 or Windows Mobile 6.1.

A backup of all personal data on the handset is also needed, as the company states: “[Back up] all your personal data to a PC, laptop or a microSD card in your phone. Back up contacts by going to Start > Contacts backup > Import/Export) Back up other items such as appointments, tasks, Internet favourites, downloaded applications, images and all other files by going to Start > Programmes > ActiveSync.”

In addition, Toshiba also says that users should de-activate the licenses of any downloaded applications. Details on how to do this can be found in the application user guide. Those who would like to update their TG01 to the latest flavor of Windows Mobile should head to this page. A TG01 Windows phone demo video is also available below.
