The mobile division of Electronic Arts, EA Mobile has just announced the availability of the Tetris game for Android devices.

One of the most popular franchises in the world, Tetris was published over 50 platforms and more than 185 countries since its launch in 1984.

The games was created by Russian computer engineer Alexey Pajitnov while he was working for the Computing Center of the Soviet Academy of Sciences.

Given the fact that the rights of the game were initially owned by his employer, the Soviet government, Pajitnov did not receive royalties until 1996 when he formed The Tetris Company.

Currently, Electronic Arts manages the exclusive licensing rights to the Tetris brand. The new game for Android devices is available for free and joins the recently launched Scrabble as EA's second free offering on the Android platform.

Tetris is one of the most distinctive, well-known and popular video game franchises in the world and it gives EA the opportunity to grow its already-expanding customer base on the Android platform. Tetris has a strong legacy in the mobile gaming world and we're excited to bring a free version of Tetris to yet another great platform,” said Bernard Kim, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for EA Interactive.

According to EA Mobile, the free version of Tetris comes with new and improved visuals, the original Tetris music and the popular marathon mode that will challenge even the most seasoned of Tetris veterans.

The Tetris brand is more relevant today than ever and we are thrilled to bring the game to yet another platform. Now, with the free version for Android users, fans can fall in love with the Tetris game all over again,” said Henk Rogers, President and CEO, Blue Planet Software, Inc.

In addition, Tetris for Android allows players to track their stats so they can improve their high scores.

Tetris for Android is now available as a free download from Android Market and is compatible with all devices running Android 1.6 and up.
