Microsoft is making it easier for Office users to include mathematical content into their documents, but also to create and share chemical information via Word.

In addition to the Microsoft Mathematics Add-In for Word, customers now have available for download the Chemistry Add-in for Word (Chem4Word).

Playing nice with both Word 2007 and Word 2010, the Chemistry Add-in for Word was built by Microsoft Research in collaboration with the University of Cambridge.

Softpedia readers might remember that in March 2010 I told them they could download and start testing the Beta release of Chemistry Add-in for Word.

The project has since then reached the final stage of the development process and version 1.0 of the new add-in for Word was launched on February 1st, 2010.

“The Chemistry Add-In for Word helps the scientific and academic research community simplify the authoring and semantic annotation of chemical information,” revealed Alex Wade, director of scholarly communication, Microsoft External Research.

Make sure to watch the video embedded below in order to get an idea of what is possible with the new Chemistry Add-in for Word.

Also, by all means, download the tool and integrate it into Word if you need to include chemical information into your documents.

The Chemistry Add-in for Word is not only available free of charge, but it’s also an open source project.

In fact, as it reached version 1.0, Microsoft Research and University of Cambridge assigned Chemistry Add-in for Word 1.0 to the Outercurve Foundation on the day of its launch, being added to the Foundation’s Research Accelerators Gallery.

“We are delighted to collaborate on the tool development with the University of Cambridge and pleased to assign the project to the Outercurve Foundation in an effort to advance scholarly communications and pave the way for scientific discovery and innovation,” Wade added.

Using the new add-in, chemistry scientists, students and researchers can insert, manage and edit chemical information in Word documents.

The toll lets them work seamlessly with labels, formulas, and even 2-D depictions. This is possible because Chem4Word uses the Chemical Markup Language (XML for Chemistry).

Essentially, in addition to including chemical content into Word documents, Office 2010 and Office 2007 are also able to enrich structures with additional data.

According to statistics provided by Microsoft, Chem4Word was downloaded in excess of 250,000 times since the project was launched into Beta almost a year ago.
