For those owning an older handheld

Sony has announced that it plans to offer three full free videogames for all those buyers of the PlayStation Portable Go who are already owners of an older version of the handheld console created by the company.

The idea is to allow those who have a lot of games on the UMD type support, which are unusable in the new Go, to get a game collection started on the new device. Of course, players need to make sure that they have a PlayStation Network account and Sony is saying that some titles will not be available in all territories and that Internet access is required to get the free ones offered.

The company has revealed that there are no less than 17 videogames that can be obtained for free, including titles like Killzone: Liberation, SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 3, WipEout Pure, Everybody’s Golf, echochrome, Buzz!: Brain Bender, Master Quiz, LocoRoco and Patapon.

In order to be able to take advantage of the new offer, those who have an older PSP will need to put a UMD in the drive of the handheld and then register for the PSP Go Rewards system when a prompt appears. Then, it is a simple matter of connecting with the Go to the PSN and getting a new theme and then waiting for the voucher that allows the player to choose the three games they are interested in downloading.

The move from Sony is interesting but a better idea would be to actually allow players who own an older PSP and a UMD drive videogames to register their titles in the Rewards program and be prompted to download them for free on the new PSP when they become available on the PlayStation Network.

The PlayStation Portable Go is set to arrive on October 1, offering more computing power, applications that can only be obtained via an Internet connection and a slicker design.
