After watching Michael Scofield come up with one ingenious plan after another in the Fox hit series “Prison Break,” time has come for Wentworth Miller and the rest of the cast to say good bye to the millions of fans worldwide. In a press statement today, Kevin Reilly, network president, has revealed that the plug has been pulled on the show, so fans are urged to enjoy it while it still lasts.

As for the reason that the fourth season will be the last, Reilly said that it was only the natural step in the evolution of the show. Coming to surprise almost no one, neither fan nor critics, the network president said that “Prison Break” had run its course. “The show is played out. Prison Break had a hell of a run, but the run has ended. This will be the last year of the show.” Reilly explained.

So far, there are no definite plans for the fourth season, but something will clearly be announced sometime in the near future. “We’ve got our remaining batch of four episodes and then there are a couple more we’re contemplating,” was the only thing that Reilly would say in terms of what we’re to expect from the fourth season. The final episodes will start airing on April 17 and, from what various media outlets are saying, we should probably also expect some special episodes to wrap up what was undoubtedly an awesome run.

On the same note, Fox is also changing the schedule for “Prison Break,” moving it to Friday night. Dubbed by the specialized media “the TV graveyard” night, the move could actually be a sign on behalf of the network that it has finally acknowledged that the show was long overdue for a cancelation, as several sources point out.

Launched in 2005, the first season of “Prison Break” soon became one of the most watched and hyped television series to date. The follow-up still managed to keep viewers with their eyes glued to the screen, but not to the same extent. Then, the show started to gradually lose viewers, especially as it became more and more obvious that producers were trying to keep it alive through unbelievable, and sometimes downright ridiculous twists of events.
