RealNetworks has been searching for a new chief executive for over half a year and, at long last, the new leader has been decided upon.

After RealNetworks spent about as much time as AMD did on CEO searching, it is Thomas Nielsen that will pick up the mantle of chief executive officer (CEO) from Mike Lunsford.

The latter has not, officially, served as more than interim CEO, though one can easily point out that seven months is more than some full-fledged CEOs got to work with this or that corporation.

Regardless, Lunsford interim role has finally ended and the man will continue to serve RealNetworks in senior capacity.

"After an extensive and thorough search, we're delighted to have selected Thomas as our new CEO," said RealNetworks company founder and board chairman Rob Glaser.

"Thomas is a terrific product executive who has also demonstrated exceptional business and leadership skills. He's a perfect fit to take RealNetworks into the future. We will leverage Thomas' extensive background in customer-driven product strategy and delivery to ensure RealNetworks' strategic plan is focused and optimized for growth."

For people who don't recognize the name of Thomas Nielsen, he used to be the vice president of Adobe's Digital Imaging Group.

While handling the division which dealt with Photoshop, Lightroom and Elements, as well as mobile, web and tablet solutions.

Prior to that, he served five years with Microsoft, in the digital media division, though those weren't his career's first years either.

The first nine years were spent at MGI Software Corp., a Canadian digital imaging software company.

"I am honored to be joining RealNetworks, an industry pioneer in digital media applications and services," Nielsen said.

"While there's a lot of work to do, RealNetworks has incredible and unique assets upon which to build, including a very talented team. I'm excited about the opportunity to help lead RealNetworks on to the next great chapter in its success."
