Sophos believes that the lack of security delivered by the Windows platform, as well as the additional Microsoft products, are overwhelming for the capabilities of a simple desktop antivirus. Sophos came to this conclusion in the light of the latest Microsoft Patch Tuesday, the company's monthly patch cycle on August 14. The Redmond company issued a total of six critical security bulletins in an effort to patch vulnerabilities in all the supported versions of the Windows operating system, in Office, in Internet Explorer and in its virtualization products. Sophos believes that only a Network Access Control solution could accurately protect against zero-days exploiting unpatched machines.

"More and more companies are recognizing the importance of ensuring that all computers which connect to their network conform to a defined security policy, which includes having the latest security patches in place," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos. "Network Access Control gives businesses the ability to control who and what is connecting to their systems. If the PC isn't running the patches that you need to secure your business you can prevent it from causing any harm to the rest of your organization. If left unpatched a PC risks bringing spyware or other malicious code right into the heart of your network."

Sophos has evolved considerably its footprint in the area of security industry responsible with supplying solutions to corporate environments. Recently, the company's Sophos Endpoint Security and Control outperform rival solutions from household names such as McAfee and Symantec in an independent review performed by Cascadia Labs. "Businesses are a prime target for cybercrime and many are looking for impartial advice on how best to protect their network," said Jared Bryant, Senior Analyst at Cascadia Labs "All three endpoint security products tested provided a strong foundation for a security strategy but one stood out: for companies that want a quick and painless security product that gets top marks for stopping zero-day threats, Sophos Endpoint Security and Control is a clear choice."
