Foresight Linux 2.5.0 is now available for download. The latest release of the Linux distro features three desktop environments to choose from, the three most popular Linux desktops, as opposed to just GNOME as before.

Given that Foresight was created mostly to showcase GNOME, it's a big change of direction for the project. Along with the latest stable versions of GNOME, KDE SC and XFCE, Foresight 2.5.0 also includes a recent LTS Linux kernel 2.6.35.11.

"Foresight 2.5.0 , released March 27th, features the latest stable GNOME, KDE and Xfce desktops, a shiny new kernel, and tons of improvements!," Og Maciel announced.

"This release is for new users as well as for returning users and early adopters! Existing users of our previous 2.1.1. release will be able to update their systems in the following 2 weeks!," he added.

Foresight 2.5.0 features the bleeding edge, though stable versions of the three desktop environments it supports. Since it's designed to be a rolling release distro, the newest packages should always be available as updates, soon after they're launched.

It uses the Conary package manager that updates only changed files in packages rather than the entire application and libraries.

Foresight Linux 2.5.0 includes a long term support kernel, but if you're looking for something more recent, Linux kernel 2.6.38 should be landing soon.

"If new and shiny is more your thing, you will be pleased to learn that the newly minted Linux kernel 2.6.38 is currently undergoing shakedown tests by Foresight’s bravest and is slated to become available as a drop-in upgrade in the coming weeks for the adventurous kind!," the announcement explained.

Along with the main desktop packages, Foresight also comes with the very latest packages of popular applications, including Chromium, Firefox, Banshee, Pidgin, GIMP and so on.
