We already know that Hearts of Iron III is getting a new expansion, called For the Motherland, and the developers at Paradox Interactive have moved to offer more information about how the game will make the grand strategy title better than ever.

Chris King, who is the lead designer working on For the Motherland, has stated that the expansion is mainly designed to add flavor to the grand strategy game, delivering the small actions that will make players feel like the leader of a country involved in the most important armed conflict of the XX century, World War II.

Partizan warfare will be introduced, making it easier for Governments in Exile to create their resistance units, dropping them behind enemy lines and making it tougher for enemies to maintain supply and advance.

The coups from Hearts of Iron 2 are back, allowing players to focus on knocking out of the game certain countries that are crucial for the war effort of the enemy.

It's not clear whether players will be able to actually see the composition of governments for other countries, something that players have asked for ever since launch date.

The war goals concept, which has been introduced in Victoria II, will be used to model how certain countries entered into alliances that seemed unnatural to their political alignment, with the goals meaning that they only join a country which promises them recovered territory or better peace deals, with a strong emphasis on delivering this for Finland and Romania.

Multicore support is also introduced to Hearts of Iron III for the first time in the series, with King saying that the Artificial Intelligence will make full use of it and that the game will run a bit faster and that the computer will be better able to oppose the player.

The A.I. will need all the help it gets as a new Theater interface is added, making it easier to delegate the running of a section of the front while the player focuses on other areas of the world.
