Currently, Samsung is the king on the DRAM industry, but that may not last

The other day, I reported that Micron had finally completed the acquisition of Elpida. Following that process, Micron is now a big cheese in the dynamic random access memory industry.

In fact, Micron might become the big cheese soon enough, if Samsung doesn't manage its supply chain well.

Back in early 2013, SK Hynix had 26.5% of the DRAM market, Micron had 13%, Elpida had 13.8% and Samsung had most of the rest (47%).

Now that Micron has bought Elpida (despite the latter having a stronger market presence, oddly enough), it is much closer to Samsung, and above what Hynix has now.

Thus, it may be that before the year is out, Micron will surpass Samsung as well. Provided the latter doesn't put up a fight of course, and I'm pretty sure it will.

Now we just have to wait and see. Popcorn is optional.
