Photo-sharing using your favorite service on the go

Originally created by former game designers Stewart Butterfield and Caterina Fake, Flickr is the world’s most popular online photo-sharing network. The service is now available to any owner of an iPhone or iPod touch through a free application that has just been granted a place in the App Store’s photography section.

Flickr began as a photo-sharing feature of the duo’s gaming project. Since 2004, it has become one of the premiere photo-sharing sites on the web, with Yahoo! purchasing Flickr for $35 million in March of 2005. Flickr competes with photo-sharing giant Photobucket.

On the iTunes App Store, Flickr’s description consists of the app’s key features, which include the ability to share your photos – “Watch the world. Flickr for the iPhone enables photo-sharing on the go – from your phone, to the world;” shoot – “upload and share photos & videos: Geo-tag your photos or add them to a set. View your photos by set and tag;” stay up-to-date – “see recent photo activities from your friends and family, search and view photos by contact, make comments or mark them as favorites;” explore the world – “search photos & videos from the Flickr community all over the world – by subject, people, or places.”

As one would expect, the iPhone application boasts a warm interface, with large buttons and easy access to the most used Flickr services. Upon launching the app, the user is greeted with a beautiful slideshow of photos from their Flickr friends. Also, it goes without saying, the Flickr iPhone app requires that its user have an active Flickr account. If one doesn’t have an account as they’ve downloaded and installed it on their device, they needn't worry – Flickr for iPhone will launch Safari for the user (upon request) and guide them through the necessary steps for creating an account.
