Rapper Flavor Flav is making news today for being arrested for speeding on Thursday, January 9. The officers who pulled him over also charged him with driving with a suspended license and possession of marijuana.

Flavor Flav was reportedly on his way to his mother's funeral when his Hyundai was spotted doing 79 mph (127 km/h) in a 55 mph (88 km/h) zone. He was pulled over at 9:30 in the morning on the Meadowbrook Parkway, near Hempstead, NYdailynews reports.

After a search of the vehicle, officers uncovered a small amount of marijuana. The rapper's record indicates that he has 16 previous license suspensions. Police say they have arrested him on felony aggravated unlicensed operation and criminal possession of marijuana.

He was later released so that he may attend his mother's funeral but was given a desk appearance ticket that requires him to show up at the Nassau County First District Court on January 28.

Flav's mom passed away on New Year's Eve, a bit of news that he shared on his Twitter account: “Hey everybody I just lost my mother Anna Drayton thismorning newyears eve she passed away and I'm gonna miss her. She lived good a good life.”

He added, “Thank you to everyone that's sending me blessings about my Momz ,,, I appreaceate [sic] you all of you so much from me and my family.”

William Drayton, Flav's real name, is best known for being a member of the “Public Enemy” rap group and for his signature accessory, a large clock which he always wears on a chain around his neck.

After falling out of the public attention, he re-emerged as a reality TV star on VH1's series “The Surreal Life,” “Strange Love” and “Flavor of Love.” The rapper had a close connection with his mother, whom he credited with inspiring him to follow a career in music.
