The mix of first-person perspective and real-time strategy is very intriguing

Developer Urban Logic Games has just revealed a teaser trailer for Flagship, a novelty item on the gaming radar, a sort of Star Trek command bridge simulator where you play the role of a fleet admiral and conquer the galaxy from the deck of your flagship.

Although there are some proper space opera games coming our way soon, with both Star Citizen and Elite: Dangerous allowing players to play cops and robbers in space and engage in first-person skirmishes all around the vast nothingness of the universe, Flagship wants to deliver a truly innovative and one-of-a-kind experience.

Flagship is a real-time strategy game on a galactic scale, played from a first-person perspective, from within a command ship. Consequently, players will have to plan and command their fleet from the bridge of an admiral ship, exploring the stars and expanding their territory.

The game is set in the future, after mankind's first budding steps beyond our solar system came to a halt with the encounter of a thriving and hostile new galaxy. The war that followed marked a sour defeat for humankind, as well as the loss of the Sol system.

The remnants of the human race have fled into a distant, backwater system, where, with limited resources at their disposal, they have to rebuild what was lost and forge a new empire from the ashes of the past.

The first-person mechanic seems like an intriguing mechanic, but so far it's too early to say whether it has any merits beyond its novelty. Novelty alone would be an interesting twist as far as regular tactical combat goes, and it will certainly be interesting to explore the unique perspective of actually being in the heat of battle, right in the middle of massive stellar warfare.

The FAQ on the game's website reveals that, aside from exploration, resource management and tactical combat, players will also be able to send teams to board and capture enemy ships, and might even be able to step into the cockpit of a fighter themselves and take a more active role in the outcome of the battles.

Flagship is intended to be a single-player game, but the developers state their interest in exploring whatever multiplayer possibilities exist for the game, after the initial release. The game is being built to be played with the Oculus Rift virtual-reality headset but can also be played without one, on a regular monitor.
