Customers leveraging the latest edition of Visual Studio have reported that they encountered issues when attempting to publish their projects to Microsoft’s Cloud data platform.

Microsoft confirmed the problems, and released an update to Visual Studio LightSwitch 2011 in response to user feedback.

Update for Microsoft Visual Studio LightSwitch 2011 (KB2603917) is currently available for download free of charge via the Microsoft Download Center.

“The LightSwitch team has released a General Distribution Release (GDR) to resolve an issue encountered when publishing to SQL Azure,” a member of the Visual Studio LightSwitch team stated.

“In some cases, customers have reported a “SQLServer version not supported” exception when publishing a database to SQL Azure. This is due to a recent SQL Azure server upgrade which caused the version incompatibility. The GDR enables LightSwitch to target the upgraded version. The fix also makes it resilient to future server upgrades.”

KB2603917, the Knowledge Base article associated with the refresh is not available at this point in time. However, this situation is bound to be only temporary, and will undoubtedly be fixed in the coming days.

In the meantime, customers that have not been able to publish their projects to SQL Azure from Visual Studio LightSwitch 2011 can go ahead and download KB2603917 and deploy the refresh as soon as possible.

“The GDR and instructions for installing it can be found on the Download Center. Thank you to all who reported the issue to us. We apologize for any inconvenience,” the Visual Studio LightSwitch team representative added.

Microsoft regards Visual Studio LightSwitch 2011 as a simplified self-service development tool designed to streamline the development of business applications without requiring coding work.

Visual Studio LightSwitch 2011 was released to manufacturing in July 2011 and is currently available for purchase for $199, discounted from $299. Customers can also grab a trail release of the VS SKU and test it free of charge.
