AMD has just announced the official availability of five new octo-core and 12-core Opteron processors based on the Magny-Cours architecture, including the company's new flagship server CPU, the 6180 SE. All the processors were announced in the fourth quarter of 2010, and use the G34 socket.

Starting from top to bottom, the most powerful CPU in AMD's server arsenal is the 12-core 6180 SE which is clocked 200MHz higher than the company's previous flagship model, the 6176 SE.

Together with the 2.5GHz operating frequency, the Opteron 6180 SE packs 6MB of L2 cache (512KB per core), 12MB of L3 cache and an ACP (average CPU power) rating of 105W.

Right below it is the Opteron 6176, which is identical with the 6176 SE in every way except for the ACP rating as it consumes only 80W in comparison with the 105W needed by the SE version.

The last one of the new 12-core Magny-Cours processors is the energy efficient 6166 HE which works at 1.8GHz, packs 6MB of L2 and 12MB of L3 cache and features a 65W ACP rating.

Prices for the new 12-core CPUs have been set at $1,514, $1,265 and $873, respectively.

On the octo-core front, AMD has also boosted the frequency of its fastest processors by 200MHz with the introduction of the Opteron 6140 which is clocked at 2.6GHz and retails for $989.

Finally, the fifth processors to be released is the low-power 6132 HE that functions at 2.2GHz and has an ACP of 65W.

Just like its 12-core siblings, these octo-core CPU models feature 12MB of L3 memory and a 1.8GHz HyperTransport link, but have to make do with 4MB of L2 cache instead of the 6MB found in their older brothers.

Starting with the third quarter of 2011, Opteron processors based on the Magny-Cours core will be replaced with 8, 12 and 16-core models built on top of the new high-performance Bulldozer architecture which is compatible with the G34 socket. (via ComputerBase.de)
