I have recently told you that the first custom Tizen ROM for the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch has arrived. The device originally came with a tweaked version of Android, but Samsung soon updated it to the Tizen garden.

Now, the same developer has now rolled out an update version of the TizenMod 3 custom ROM (via xda-developers), which is based on the NF1 and NE5 firmware and adds compatibly with the newer Samsung Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo.

The custom ROM adds root and a few other features like Android L, a CPU frequency monitor or governor modification support. And for those who like to thinker with the device’s interface, the ROM adds a bunch of custom icon themes, custom fonts, ringtones and alarms choices.

However, the cool part comes now. Installing the custom ROM on your Gear 2 or Gear 2 Neo will open up compatibility. When Samsung launched the devices, a lot of people complained about the fact that you needed to be a Samsung smartphone/tablet owner to be able to use the two smartwatches.

Well, the custom ROM changes things in this department and grants compatibility to all Android phones. To do so, you’ll need to put the .apk file on your device and manually install the Gear-related application there.
