Ever since Marvel announced it was making a feature film based on “Thor,” and especially after it revealed that it had Chris Hemsworth as lead, comic book fans have been on their toes. Now, they can rest assured that, despite lots of skepticism, “Thor” looks like a potential winner for the year to come.

Anyone not living under a rock must know that “Thor” is one of the most anticipated movies of 2011: for one, it’s got a huge fanbase and lots of great names in it; secondly, it has a virtual unknown as the lead.

Understandably, pressure is huge for this not to be a disappointment from any point of view. As the Washington Post notes, judging on the recently released trailer alone, “Thor” is a winner.

The film, as mentioned above, stars Chris Hemsworth (whom fans may remember from “Home and Away” and “Star Trek”) as the main hero, the warrior Thor, thrown among us mortals because he’s taken his gifts and responsibilities lightly.

Of course, being here on earth does have its perks, because he gets to meet Jane Foster (played by the always enchanting Natalie Portman) who will help him discover the hero in him, risen to protect our tiny planet.

By the looks of the trailer, the film will be packed not only by heavy names (like the aforementioned Portman, now getting plenty of Oscar-buzz for her role as a ballerina in “Black Swan” and Sir Anthony Hopkins) but also lots of GCI.

“By the beard of Odin, the ever-authoritative Anthony Hopkins certainly commands the screen, even without the aid of CGI,” the post says.

Nevertheless, the question of whether Hemsworth will manage to rise to the challenge and pull off the part, remains to be answered once the film is out in theaters.

“Yet what this mere two-plus minutes leaves still unresolved is whether Chris Hemsworth, as a leading actor, can hold the Thunderer’s hammer. Till the film’s opening next May, the jury of geeks and critics (and yes, so often, those two parties are one and the same) will mostly remain out,” the Post also says.

“Then again, when you’re surrounded by not only Hopkins but also the likes of Stellan Skarsgård, Ray Stevenson and Colm Feore, that hammer load gets a fair bit lighter. And by next May, Portman might well be wielding her own heavy hardware: the little metal fella named Oscar,” the publication says.

“Thor” opens on May 6, 2011 in the US in 3D – and in 2D only in select locations. Below is the trailer, enjoy.
