Shortly after he wrapped shooting for the critically acclaimed “Nightcrawler,” for which he lost 25 pounds (11.3 kg), Jake Gyllenhaal started to train to bulk up for another role, that of Junior Middleweight Champion Billy “The Great” Hope.

The film is called “Southpaw” and will be out in the summer of 2015. The first trailer was released over the weekend and is available in full below.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day”) off a script by Kurt Sutter (“Sons of Anarchy”), “Southpaw” tells the story of a former boxing champ who loses his wife in a violent altercation and sees his entire life turned upside down.

He also loses custody of his daughter but is determined to get back to boxing to win her back, to get their life back, at least partially.

There doesn’t seem to be more to the story, so I get those who complain online about how this trailer seems to reveal all of the movie. However, before jumping to such conclusions, we should bear in mind that trailers are often misleading.

On the other hand, even if this one includes all the important stuff from all 3 acts of “Southpaw,” that probably means that the journey from point A to point B is more important than showing up what point B is. Think of “Training Day.”

Beside a heavier, musclier Gyllenhaal, “Southpaw” also stars Rachel McAdams, Curtis Jackson aka 50 Cent, Forest Whitaker, Rita Ora and Clare Foley.
