While taking part in their annual field trip to the Wakatobi Marine National Park in Indonesia, a group of University of Essex students got to attend some really quirky lectures.

Not to beat around the bush: Professor David Smith's lectures were held underwater, at about 18 meters (almost 60 feet) below sea level.

The professor later explained that, since he was meaning to talk about marine biology issues (i.e. how climate change and global warming are affecting the world's coral reefs), it made sense to ask his students to accompany him underwater.

Sources say that, in order to communicate with the students, Professor David Smith had to make use of specialized audio equipment.

“I have been on thousands of dives over the years but this was a totally new experience as I was able to explain to students exactly what they were seeing and inject more passion and feeling into the whole lecture.”

“It was very special and transformed the whole experience both for me and our students,” the professor commented on this experience.
