Nexus S by Samsung, the first mobile phone to arrive on shelves with Google's new Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, has just received its first software update, dubbed GRH78.

The new solution is reportedly sporting the official version of 2.3.1, and replaces the previously available firmware GRH55 on Nexus S.

The deployment process hasn't been completed as of yet, but things are moving forth on the right path, it seems, and it might not be too long before all Nexus S owners out there receive the update.

As for what the new firmware would include, the official changelog shows the following, reportedly: “This system update from Google contains important bug fixes plus the latest version of Maps.”

In case there are some of you who didn't receive a notification on the availability of this firmware version for your Nexus S devices, or would like to perform the update before Google sends it over, you could force the update yourselves.

There are two ways to do so, one involving the dialing of *#*#checkin#*#* from the dialer, which would force the device to check for the software update and download it.

The other way to update the Nexus S involves downloading the software solution from Google's servers here (via Androidos.in), and performing a manual update.

For that, you would have to rename the software to Update.Zip and place it on the root folder on your microSD Card.

Then, turn off the Nexus S, reboot it into the bootloader (through holding volume up and power on), use the volume buttons to go to Recovery on the list of available options, and hit the Power button.

As soon as the triangle appears on the screen all you would need to do is to press volume up and power once again, and then choose update from the list of available options.

It is pretty impressive that Google and Samsung delivered the first update for Nexus S so soon after the initial launch, but this can mean only good news for end users. After all, it appears that they are on top of any issues the device might sport.
