The preview issue of Entertainment Weekly brings the first ever photo from Robert Pattinson’s new film, on which he’s been working for months in Australia. Click on the image above to see it in full.

Described as a “near-future Western film set in Australia,” “The Rover” also stars Guy Pearce and is directed by David Michôd, he of the “Animal Kingdom” fame.

He tells EW that his new film will be incredibly gritty and incredibly violent (which is also obvious from the first pic from it), and also action-packed and tense.

“It’s like a new gold rush. Where people from all corners of the world have come out to the desert to scrape out an existence. Petty criminals and miscreants and hustlers,” Michôd says of the universe he imagined in “The Rover.”

He also wrote the script for the film.

“The basic story is really quite elemental. You’ve got a really dark, dangerous, murderous person in Guy’s character, and in Rob’s character you have a quite troubled and damaged, but beautiful and naïve, soul,” he adds.

“The Rover” has a tentative release date for 2013.
