Before “Twilight” and the brooding, virgin and “vegetarian” vampire Edward Cullen, there was no hotter bloodsucker around than Dracula, with Gary Oldman’s take from the 1992 Coppola movie based on Bram Stoker’s hit novel standing out from the crowd.
Well, Dracula is making a comeback this fall and, if you’re into the character, you might actually be happy to hear that he’s getting a retelling. “Dracula Untold,” which will be out in October, is actually an origin story.
That is to say, the film won’t focus just on Dracula’s evil ways and the challenge he poses for a bunch of humans who realize he’s undead so, naturally, he can’t be killed that easily to stop him from feeding on the blood of the innocent.
Starring Luke Evans as Prince Vlad Tepes, “Dracula Untold” will show how the Prince became the “monster” the entire world knows today, by signing a pact actually meant to protect his family, but which eventually ended up by costing him his eternal soul.
Universal has released two brand new posters for the film, showing Evans as the Prince, looking all broody and handsome. If you’re getting familiar vibes from them, it’s probably because of the resemblance to some of the artwork used for Warner Bros.’ “Batman Begins,” the first installment in Christopher Nolan’s “Dark Knight” trilogy.
“Dracula Untold” is directed by Gary Shore, and also stars Dominic Cooper and Sarah Gadon. It will be out in October and, while chances are it won’t make that much of a splash, let’s keep an open mind and hope for the best. At least until we’ll have seen the first trailer.
