Fans have been saying all along that an “Underworld” movie in which Kate Beckinsale doesn’t get to wear her trademark (p)leather catsuit is not really worth the time and, by the looks of the first trailer for “Awakening,” they were right.

“Underworld: Rise of the Lycans” was deemed a disappointment by fans, mostly because it failed to rise to the standards set by the first two films in the franchise, which starred Beckinsale as the vampire Selene.

Hopefully, “Awakening” will make amends for that, especially since it will see Kate’s much anticipated return to the role that made her one of the hottest onscreen vampires of all times.

The first trailer surely doesn’t disappoint, as RopeOfSilicon also points out. It shows Selene waking up in a world she no longer knows, in which she has to fight against a bigger, more fearsome and more determined enemy.

She returns; this time Selene has escaped imprisonment to find herself in a world where humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans, and are conducting an all-out war to eradicate both immortal species,” RoS writes.

As such, Selene must probably join forces with the Lycans to keep humans under control.

What is immediately noticeable in the trailer is that the fourth “Underworld” film will also be bathed in blue-ish light in almost every scene, just like previous installments.

Another thing that stands out in the trailer is the absence of Selene’s daughter: as we also informed you some time ago, the fourth film will see Beckinsale’s character pass the torch to her daughter, of whose existence she learns just now.

“After being held in a coma-like state for fifteen years, vampire Selene (Kate Beckinsale) learns that she has a fourteen-year-old vampire / Lycan hybrid daughter, Nissa, and when she finds her they must stop BioCom from creating super Lycans that will kill them all,” a leaked synopsis of the plot was saying in November last year.

For the time being, this is all fans have to go on. “Underworld Awakening” arrives in theaters in 3D on January 20, 2012. Below is the trailer, enjoy.
