The hard-working developers behind the VLOS project proudly announced yesterday (January 7th) the immediate availability of the first Beta release of the upcoming VLOS 2.0 operating system. With Linux kernel 2.6.32 and lots of new and popular applications on board, VLOS 2.0 Beta 1 is a Live DVD based on the ever-popular Gentoo Linux. VLOS 2.0 Beta 1 is available for both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures.

The development of VLOS 2.0 will continue with a second Beta release expected at the end of this month, an RC release in the middle of February and the final release on the last day of February, 2010.

Highlights of VLOS 2.0 Beta 1:

· Linux kernel 2.6.32; · Automatic detection and configuration of Nvidia video drivers; · Automatic detection and configuration of ATI Radeon video drivers; · Installed the Linux kernel sources; · Automatic mount of NTFS partitions; · Automatic 3D desktop effects powered by Compiz (once the video driver was activated); · Added Adobe Flash Player 10; · Added Sun Java Runtime Environment; · Added Gwibber, a client for Twitter; · Added OpenOffice.org office suite; · Added Wine, to easily emulate Windows applications; · Ability to sync iPod touch and iPod 3Gs, via Gtkpod and Ifuse; · Installed the Hulu desktop; · Added Skype, Pidgin, eMeSeNe and Empathy instant messengers; · Added InkScape vectors drawing tool; · Added The GIMP image editor.

However, a few known issues remain unresolved for this Beta release of VLOS 2.0. For example, if automatic partitioning is used, GRUB will not be set up correctly; some errors will appear at boot; the file associations and the MIME types are not correctly configured in Mozilla Firefox and GNOME; update/upgrade is not possible using Sulfur (will be fixed in the second Beta release).

The following optimal hardware components are recommended for the VLOS 2.0 operating system:

· A modern CPU (Dual Core Processors (Intel or AMD)); · 1 GB of system RAM; · 20 GB or more of free hard drive space; · Supported 3D video card; · A DVD-ROM unit.
