Firefox 3.6.x will continue to be maintained with security and stability updates for a short period of time, according to Mozilla, therefore all users are strongly encouraged to upgrade to Firefox 4, the software vendor said. The 3.5 branch is set to become obsolete even sooner.

Soon to be ‘discontinued’ not only for Windows and Linux users, but Mac users as well, the Firefox 3.6 and 3.5 branches are going to be supported with maintenance updates only for a short period of time.

The people at Mozilla strongly advise fans of the open source web browser to upgrade to the latest version, as usual.

“Firefox 3.6.x will be maintained with security and stability updates for a short amount of time. All users are strongly encouraged to upgrade to Firefox 4,” Mozilla said.

Mozilla Firefox Release Manager, Christian Legnitto, issued a note on Tuesday via the Mozilla Developer Center announcing immediate availability of Firefox 3.6.16 and Firefox 3.5.18 for all supported platforms, including Mac OS X.

“We strongly recommend that all Firefox users upgrade to these latest releases,” Legnitto wrote on Tuesday.

The official release notes for both updates indicate that maintenance has been solely focused on blacklisting a few invalid HTTPS certificates.

Yet, “All Firefox 3, 3.5, and 3.6 users are strongly encouraged to upgrade to Firefox 4,” Legnitto stresses, suggesting updates will become scarce, if not completely unavailable real soon.

Mozilla recently introduced Firefox 4, the latest version of its popular web browser for Mac, Windows, and Linux computer users worldwide.

The new-fox-on-the-block brings an adjusted tab location with a focus on visual priority, as well as new tab movement, new synchronization features for settings, passwords, bookmarks, history, open tabs and other elements across multiple devices, and easier way to manage add-ons.

Performance enhancements include a brand new JägerMonkey JavaScript engine, WebM and HD Video support, WebGL support for 3D graphics, fast scrolling on complex web pages, a new HTML5 parser and full support for web video, audio, drag & drop, and file handling.

All versions of Mozilla’s web browser (branches 3.5, 3.6 and the final build of Firefox 4) are immediately available for download via the link below.

For those who want to try out Firefox 4, the browser requires Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard or Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard on a Mac equipped with an Intel x86 processor.

Additionally, users must pack 512 MB of RAM, and roughly 200 MB hard drive space.
