Firefly fans finally have something to cheer for as Fox has just announced that the series will continue, but not on TV screens.

Polygon reports that games developer Spark Plug Games and Quantum Mechanix (QMx), a studio that creates screen-accurate replicas, collectibles, apparel and artwork inspired by some of the most popular shows and movies, have teamed up to launch Firefly Online.

Announced at San Diego Comic Con, Firefly Online is a MMORPG based on the TV series. The game is currently in development and will be released in summer 2014, hopefully.

There’s a catch though as Firefly Online will only be available on Android and iOS platforms. There are no details on a possible launch on the PC yet, but developers have confirmed that this will be a cross-platform MMORPG.

“At QMx, we know firsthand how great and powerful a franchise Firefly is and how mighty the Browncoats are. It has always been our mission to bring the Verse to life for our customers in every way possible. The idea of creating an interactive experience where fans can have their own Firefly adventures — well, that's just too shiny for words,” said Andy Gore, CEO of QMXi and Quantum Mechanix Inc.

Together with the announcement of the new game, developers have also released a teaser that doesn’t show any gameplay.

However, the folks at Spark Plug Games have offered some tidbits of information regarding their Firefly Online project, so players should expect to be able to build and customize their own ships, hire their own crew and accept or reject various missions.

Basically, the whole theme of the game sounds exactly like Joss Whedon's cult sci-fi series, so let’s hope the execution will be up on par. For more details, check out Firefly Online official website.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with QMx on Firefly Online. QMx has a long and successful history with Firefly and we couldn't think of a better partner to make a truly innovative game that will stand up in the Verse and to its passionate fans,” said Matt McMahon, VP of mobile for Fox Digital Entertainment.
