Astronomers at the Space Science Institute (SSI) in Boulder, Colorado, say that a new impact occurred at Jupiter, on September 10, 2012. Telescopes determined that the event occurred at 6:30 am EDT (1030 GMT).

Amateur astronomer George Hall released the image above showing the actual impact on his website. He carried out the observations from Dallas, Texas, using a 12" LX200GPS telescope and a Point Grey Flea 3 camera.

SSI astronomer Heidi Hammel says that the impact looked like a fireball, and that observations to be conducted over the next few days will attempt to observe the potential scars left behind.

The flash was first reported by Oregon amateur astronomer Dan Petersen, at 11:36 GMT yesterday, Universe Today reports.
