Officials have announced that the death toll at the poultry meat processing plant in China has risen to 119.
As I documented, a fire killed over a hundred workers at the Baoyuanfeng Poultry slaughterhouse in Mishazi township, Jilin province.
350 workers were on site but only a hundred of those escaped, while the others were unable to get out as a gate was closed.
Rescuers are still looking for survivors amid the wrecks of the buildings. Explosions were reported before the factory caught ablaze at 6 a.m. on Monday. The Guardian wrote that the fire started during a shift change at the factory.
Preliminary reports reveal that a chemical ammonia leak has caused the blasts. The substance is used as a coolant in the plant. The walls were insulated with foam, which made the building catch on fire in instants.
