The PlayStation 3 version of the Japanese role playing game Final Fantasy XIII-2 has managed to take over the top position in the weekly video games sales chart for the Japanese market, as compiled by tracking firm Media Create.

The game, which is both developed and published by Square Enix, has managed to sell 524,214 units on the Sony home console, which is just about 30 percent of what the previous titles in the long running franchise has managed two years ago.

Square Enix is sure to be disappointed by the results, which might show that the brand has suffered long term damage from the disastrous launch of the Final Fantasy XIV MMO while those interested in the single player narrative have not been able to recover after the issues they had with Final Fantasy XIII.

The game is supposed to launch in the West at the end of January 2012.

Second place in Japan has gone to Monster Hunter 3G, from Capcom and for the Nintendo 3DS handheld, which has managed to sell another 208,427 units after it topped the chart during the previous week.

The 3DS has also benefited from the launch of the newest version of Monster Hunter 3G, posting its best results since launch in Japan.

Mario Kart 7 from Nintendo, another 3DS release, has taken third place in the chart with sales of 182,418.

3DS based games also took fourth and fifth place, with new release Inazuma Eleven Go: Shine/Dark from Level 5 selling 132,259 units while Super Mario 3D Land moved more than 110,000 copies.

Kirby’s Return to Dream Land for the Wii has taken over sixth place, with sales of 71,028.

There are just two games for the new PlayStation Vita in the top ten in seventh and eighth place, with Hot Shots Golf managing to sell 61,412 units while Uncharted: Golden Abyss managed to deliver another 48,224.

The final two places are captured by Just Dance for the Wii and PokePark 2 for the same platform.
