The Final Fantasy series has been less than successful in the last few years and it seems that the team at publisher Square Enix is getting ready to launch a whole new intellectual property in order to plug the gap in their launch line-up.

Speaking to Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, Tetsuya Nomura, one of the leading producers working at Square Enix, stated, “There is also a secret team working on an unannounced title, so there is a chance that some information about that will be announced this year too, please continue looking forward to these announcements.”

Nomura has been previously linked to both the Final Fantasy and the Kingdom Hearts series, and it is not clear whether Square Enix plans to deliver new games linked to those two franchises or something entirely new.

Nomura also confirmed that in the coming months gamers would get more information on Final Fantasy Versus XIII, part of the Fabula Nova Chrystalys universe and a game that had long been in development, and on the High Definition remake linked to Final Fantasy X.

A 3D version of Kingdom Hearts and the spin-off Theathythm will also be detailed.

Square Enix is set to launch Final Fantasy XIII-2 on Western markets during this week and has quite a few new projects in the works.

The publisher has promised to launch two or three new intellectual properties in the coming years and has signed a licensing deal for the Unreal Engine with Epic Games for a number of video games that were not yet announced.

During 2010 the company unveiled that it planned to expand its presence on Western markets and that it would be working with developers from the targeted markets in order to move away from the Japanese role-playing genre to shooters and even strategy.
