Square Enix is thinking about bringing its highly successful Final Fantasy XI online role-playing to the PlayStation Vita, at least according to a statement from the former leader of the project.

Sony presented the PlayStation Vita portable console at last month's E3 2011 conference and wowed the audience with the promise of lots of high-quality titles for it, including Uncharted: Golden Abyss or a mysterious BioShock project.

Now, a new rumor has appeared, with Japanese games magazine Famitsu, via Siliconera, publishing a statement from the former producer of Final Fantasy XI, Hiromichi Tanaka, who revealed that Square Enix is currently thinking about bringing the massively multiplayer online role-playing game to the new console.

Square Enix initially released Final Fantasy XI back in 2002, for platforms like the PC, PlayStation 2 or Xbox 360, reaching some pretty impressive sales, and still has a loyal fanbase in the present, thanks to subsequent expansions that upgraded the online experience and added lots of new content that can be consumed by subscribers.

A new Final Fantasy MMO was deployed for the PC last year, Final Fantasy XIV, but its launch was extremely troubled due to lots of bugs and issues, so it's still currently free to play until Square Enix fixes everything and can start charging a subscription for it. A PlayStation 3 version of Final Fantasy XIV is also in the works, but, until the PC version is in top shape, Square Enix won't release it.

Given the pretty impressive power of the Playstation Vita as well as its variety of interface options, from the regular buttons, to the twin sticks or the touchscreen, the possibility of seeing Final Fantasy XI for it is quite high.

Square Enix, however, hasn't talked about the subject, so MMO players shouldn't start saving up for a PlayStation Vita just yet.
