Square Enix is keen on keeping lovers of the Final Fantasy franchise satisfied as it works on the upcoming release of the next big game in the series, Final Fantasy XIII, which will be out in Japan this winter and in the rest of the world early in 2010.

So, the Japanese publisher is announcing that on Friday, July 17, players who are using the Nintendo Wii will be able to download and play Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Darklord. The game is exclusively distributed through the WiiWare digital distribution service.

After WiiWare also got My Life as a King, the new Final Fantasy: Chrystal Chronicles title is set to basically switch things around by making gamers play the role of a villain who needs to make sure that good adventurers are not successful in their attempt at taking over the tower where he lives.

Larry Sparks, who is the vice president for PAL region brands for Square Enix Ltd., stated that “The Crystal Chronicles universe keeps growing and bringing innovative gaming experiences for everyone. Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Darklord is a real time strategy game that offers players a new take on the Crystal Chronicles universe. We hope for this brand new and engaging WiiWare title to be enjoyed by Wii owners of all ages.”

The daughter of the Darklord, the heroine of the new game, will need to be cunning in how she dispenses traps and monsters. The characters of My Life as King are returning and better artifacts and more monsters can be obtained in order to better shore up the defenses against good.

The game world will be full of side quests allowing players to get fresh content to play around with, while Square Enix is also planning to release DLC for the game, mainly consisting of new creatures, artifacts and maps.
