Lucas, a 13-year-old dog formerly owned by NHL football player Michael Vick, was recently put to sleep in Utah.

The dog was rescued from Vick's Bad Newz Kennels back in 2007, and had been looked after by the Best Friends Sanctuary in Utah since 2008.

Ecorazzi says that the dog used to be Michael Vick's champion dog. When taken in by the people at the Best Friends Sanctuary, it was given the chance to be rehabilitated.

By the looks of it, the dog was surprisingly social and very well behaved.

“[He] was a sweet, affectionate, regular dog who wanted nothing more than to be around people – to love and to be loved,” the CEO of Best Friends told members of the press.

The same source informs us that what killed Lucas was a blood parasite that commonly affects fighting dogs.

The parasite is named Babesia, and although veterinarians can treat some of the symptoms it triggers, the disease in itself it not curable.
