We’re still one month away from the release of one of the most anticipated films of the year and it’s already proved itself to be a hit: Fandango informs that tickets for “Fifty Shades of Grey,” with Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson as leads, are selling like hot cakes.

In fact, AceShowbiz reports, the film has just become the fastest-selling R-rated release on the site, beating “The Hangover” 2 and 3, “Gone Girl” and “SATC 2,” all of which turned out to be massive blockbusters.

“Fifty Shades” is also the biggest seller for a non-sequel since “The Hunger Games” in 2012, so if you had any doubts that it would make a killing at the box office, now is the time to put them to rest: this film will be huge.

It may be critically panned, but it will make a lot of money for everyone involved, because it has the huge fanbase of E.L. James’ novels, on which it’s based, to count on.

“Very few books can claim true national phenomenon status – and ‘Fifty Shades’ ranks with ‘Twilight,’ ‘The Hunger Games’ and ‘Gone Girl’ as novels that entered the zeitgeist from coast to coast,” Fandango chief correspondent Dave Karger says.

“Fifty Shades of Grey” will be out in theaters on Valentine’s Day, but readers of the novels have already been warned not to expect it to be as raunchy as the books, because that would have meant content for an NC-17 rating, which is the equivalent of MPAA’s kiss of death.

Instead, it will be just a love story with certain BDSM elements and many love scenes taking place off camera.
