The premium version of the Google Reader alternative is now open to everyone

Feedly, which has emerged as the main replacement for most Google Reader exiles, has made available its premium accounts to everyone. For $5 (€3.75) per month or $45 (€33.6) per year, users get some additional features and better support.

Feedly Pro has been available only for a few users, early backers, but the premium tier is now open to all.

For $5 a month you get search, the only crucial feature in the premium offering, along with Evernote and Pocket (Read It Later) integration, as well as premium support.

Simple integration with Evernote and Pocket is great if you use any of those services. You can easily send longer reads to Pocket to save them for later, for example.

The ability to search within the feeds is the only thing available in Google Reader that's missing in Feedly, and pretty much all the other online feed readers as well.

The original Feedly actually had search but, when people began migrating from Reader in mass, the company first hid and then disabled the feature altogether since it was putting a strain on the servers.

This is why Feedly and its competitors are asking for money for search; it's a resource-intensive feature and none of them have Google's infrastructure or search might to offer it for free.

Still, if search and integration with other online services isn't enough, the company promises to add more features to the premium accounts over time, so if you're not convinced now, Feedly Pro may sound like a better bargain in the future.

"New pro features will be added regularly. The goal is to offer our most passionate users more productivity and make feedly sustainable in the long run," the company explained.

"This is an important milestone for feedly because a more sustainable company will lead to more innovation for users of both feedly pro and feedly standard," it added.
