A much easier update from Fedora 8 to 9

Welcome once more to the Fedora Weekly Report! This week, we have a change in the Fedora Board composition, a discussion about the Fedora Pre-Update and a few security advisories and updates for Fedora 7 and 8.

The Fedora Board was formed two years ago, in 2006, and since then, the Fedora project has changed in many different ways, becoming more and more a volunteer distribution, with two thirds of the packages maintained by persons who dedicated their time and knowledge for the betterment of Fedora. FESCo is made up of an almost even mix of volunteers and Red Hat employees, but with the post-Fedora 9 election, the composition of the Board will change and will have five community-elected seats and four Red Hat elected seats.

Paul Frields, on the Fedora Advisory Board mailing list, stated: "I'm very pleased to report that with the post-Fedora 9 election, the Board composition will be a better reflection of the strides our community has made in self-organization and self-governance, and of our healthy partnership with Red Hat. Starting with this election, the Board will move to a composition of five (5) community-elected seats and four (4) Red Hat-appointed seats. This is an issue I've been advocating over the past couple of weeks, and I'm delighted to be able to make this change following my first release as Fedora Project Leader. I look at this as a significant step in the evolution of the Board and Fedora's governance overall."

Eric Mesa notes on his blog, that the days when you had to reinstall Fedora - because it was much easier than going through the tedious upgrade process - every time you wanted a newer version will be over soon. Fedora Pre-Upgrade will address some issues related to the upgrade process. He says: "You don't have to download a ton of packages and burn them to a CD if you don't even have them installed. Also, if I understand this correctly, the package resolution will be done while you download. Therefore, like upgrading Ubuntu, you should be able to keep using your distro while you upgrade. That's always been another HUGE pet peeve for me."
