Yes! It's not a dream, Fedora Core 5 it's finally here. It comes with many new features and improvements, fixes and better stability over the previous versions.

Some of the highlights are: - Linux kernel 2.6.15 - KDE 3.5.1 - GNOME 2.14 - X.org 7.0 - Xen - OpenOffice.org 2.0.1 - The GIMP 2.2.10 - K3b 0.12.10 - Eclipse SDK 3.1.2 - GCC 4.1.0 ...and much more new stuff to play with.

I have downloaded and installed Fedora Core 5 today successfully and I was amazed about the new Anaconda installer which, at least on the software customization side, is very complex and at the same time very simple to use. You will notice it's broken down in categories, each one with its subcategories; each one has an "Optional packages" button that will be activated upon selection of the corresponding subcategory. By clicking the "Optional packages" button you can choose from the packages provided, what you want or don't want to install on your brand new Fedora Core system.

The "software categories" system implemented by the Fedora Team in this new release is noticeable in the KDE menu as well.

About the Fedora Project

The Fedora Project is a Red-Hat-sponsored and community-supported open source project. It is also a proving ground for new technology that may eventually make its way into Red Hat products. It is not a supported product of Red Hat, Inc.

The goal of The Fedora Project is to work with the Linux community to build a complete, general purpose operating system exclusively from free software. Development will be done in a public forum. The project will produce time-based releases of Fedora Core about 2-3 times a year with a public release schedule.

The Red Hat engineering team will continue to participate in the building of Fedora Core and will invite and encourage more outside participation than was possible in Red Hat Linux.

By using this more open process, we hope to provide an operating system that uses free software development practices and is more appealing to the open source community.

Fedora is a set of projects sponsored by Red Hat and guided by the contributors. These projects are developed by a large community of people who strive to provide and maintain the very best in free, open source software and standards.

Fedora Core, the central Fedora project, is an operating system and platform based on Linux which is always free for anyone to use, modify, and distribute, now and forever.
