With Oscar winning film “Slumdog Millionaire” making over $178 million internationally so far, the father of one of the children who appear in it is now taking to the media to vent his financial frustrations. Azharuddin Ismail’s father says film bosses should take care of the 10-year-old boy by paying him right now with no delay, the British publication the Daily Mail reveals.

Mohammed Ismail, 45, suffers from tuberculosis, still lives in the slums and makes almost $50 a month by gathering wood. Whereas his son was paid close to $1,000 while shooting the critically-acclaimed movie, and a trust fund was set up in his name, money that he would benefit from – plus interest – when he reaches 18, Mr. Ismail argues the movie studio, and director Danny Boyle in particular, should take care of the boy right now. The man also adds Boyle should do that by paying him, the father, all the money on the spot.

“My son has taken on the world and won. I am so proud of him, but I want more money. They promised me a new house but it hasn’t happened. I’m still in the slum. I want the money now, it is of no use later. Mr. Boyle should take care of my son.” Mr. Ismail tells the media, explaining that what he has got until now has been simply “not enough.” What he intends to do with the money, should Boyle agree to the proposal, is not specified.

The request comes after Mr. Ismail was photographed beating the 10-year-old boy after he requested he got some sleep after arriving home from the Oscars ceremonies. Apparently, the man would not agree with Azharuddin being jet-lagged, and would not allow him to sleep it off.

This also comes after director Boyle and producer Christian Colson announced last week that they would personally see that Azharuddin and Rubina Ali (the girl who also stars in the movie) would get new apartments to live in, estimated at around $30,000.

“These are bricks and mortar flats. They will have electricity, running water and good sanitation. They will still be close to their friends and extended family. Their community is very important to them, and they don’t want to move too far away from them. They have looked at a number of places but like anyone choosing a home, it is taking some time for them to agree on a final one.” Boyle pointed out at the time.

So far, the director of the film has refused to make any comments on Mr. Ismail’s request. He also declined to reveal the sum that went into Azharuddin’s trust fund, for fear that other people might prey on him for a profit. The young star is also currently receiving a $30 weekly allowance that is supposed to help him in school.
