As Fandango also puts it, the Academy might have considered “The Hurt Locker” the best movie of 2009, but fans don’t quite see it that way. Based on a recent online poll, “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” has been voted the best film of last year, getting an overwhelming 66 percent of all the votes cast, the movie-oriented publication informs.

This popularity win might even weigh heavier than any Oscar, since it reflects what fans love the most – and that happens to be the second installment in “The Twilight Saga.” Of the 71,000 moviegoers that voted, 66 percent thought “New Moon” was the best movie of last year, ahead of other productions like “Avatar,” “The Blind Side” and “Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen.”

“When it comes to the Academy, they chose The Hurt Locker as this year’s best film. But when it comes to the fans, well, they had a little something different in mind. As part of the festivities currently taking place in Las Vegas during the annual ShoWest convention, it’s just been announced that The Twilight Saga: New Moon will receive the ShoWest/Fandango Fan Choice Award for 2009. With over 66% of the vote, New Moon topped other fan favorites during the 8-week online survey in which 71,000 moviegoers participated. Other films in the survey included Avatar, The Hangover, The Blind Side, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, The Proposal, Up, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, 2012, Star Trek and more,” Fandango writes.

“Moviegoers on Fandango have been behind the franchise from the very beginning, and that’s why the first Twilight movie won the Fan Choice Award last year. The big question will be whether or not Eclipse will be in the running for next year’s award, and if the franchise can pull off a three-peat,” Chief Marketing Officer at Fandango Ted Hong says of the win for “New Moon.” Another important aspect is that the vampire film won despite going against “Avatar,” “the biggest ticket-seller in Fandango history.”

Also at the ShoWest Awards ceremony, which took place the other day in Las Vegas, Katherine Heigl was named Female Star of the Year, Sam Worthington Male Star of the Year, Amanda Seyfried Breakthrough Female Star of the Year, and Vanessa Hudgens Female Star of Tomorrow, as we also told you a short while ago.
