“Game of Thrones” fans are left reeling again, after another one of the characters they’d come to consider “favorite” has met a very untimely and quite brutal end. As if that wasn’t enough heartache to suffer, the Breaker of Chains, Queen Daenerys, also did something that she might come to regret one day.

Loyal fans surely do.

*If you haven’t seen the episode “The Mountain and the Viper” yet from season 4, it’s not advisable to continue reading because the article includes major spoilers.*

The episode included the trial by combat of one Imp named Tyrion Lannister, who stood accused of the murder of that obnoxious brat Joffrey Lannister. His champion in the fight was Oberyn Martell, aka the Red Viper, who agreed to go up against The Mountain because he wanted to avenge the death of his sister, whom The Mountain had raped and murdered.

The final scene was as shocking as the Red Wedding in the previous season, if we’re to judge based on reactions to it online. You would expect fans of the series to have become accustomed to one simple fact by now: whoever they happen to be rooting for at one particular moment in the story stands good chances of dying a very violent death.

This is precisely what happened to Oberyn who, for a few minutes there, actually seemed to have won the fight against the very dangerous and physically impressive The Mountain, brother of The Hound. This was his biggest mistake though: he got too cocky at the end, pulling out the spear he’d stabbed him with to ask for his confession.

The Mountain gauged out The Viper’s eyes and crushed his head with his bare hands until it exploded. Literally.

According to many GoT fans who took their outrage to Twitter, this was the last drop in an already too full cup: they’re not watching anymore because they can’t love a character without him or her being punished for it.

They’ll come back, don’t fret about it. Meanwhile, author George R.R. Martin, who wrote the series of novels on which the HBO show is based, must be like…

Another shocking development in the story, which too has caused some unrest to fans, is the fact that Queen Daenerys has punished Ser Jorah Mormont with lifelong exile from her presence for his early act of betrayal, in what is a classic case of the past coming back to haunt you.

You might remember that, at the beginning of the series, Ser Jorah was a spy for the Lannisters, hoping to be allowed to return home after years of wandering the earth as an outlaw.

Speaking with EW, Emilia Clarke, who plays the Mother of Dragons, said that this was the most heartbreaking scene she ever had to shoot on GoT. More heartbreaking than when Khal Drogo died?! Apparently so.

“Emotionally for me it was so intricate,” she says. “Jorah’s been with me since day one, season one. The scene itself is unpleasant because I — Emilia — know that what Dany is doing is wrong, And it was the first time I’ve ever felt that.”
