Roundcube Webmail, a browser-based multilingual IMAP client with an application-like user interface, has finally reached version 1.0 after eight years of development.

Roundcube Webmail 1.0 provides full functionality for an e-mail client, including MIME support, address book, folder manipulation, message searching, and spell checking. This is not your run-of- the-mill email solution, as it comes with full of features that are usually only available in commercial-grade applications.

“We’re very proud to announce the stable version 1.0 of Roundcube Webmail. After more than 8 years since the project was published, we feel confident to name it one-dot-oh. And mainly we were busy cleaning up the codebase, fixing a lot of bugs, making it more stable and writing more documentation,” said the developers in the official announcement.

Don't be fooled by the round number of the latest version, 1.0. The Roundcube Webmail client has been stable for many years, even if the version number didn't seem to indicate so.

The developers also took advantage of the big number change and they managed to squeeze in a lot of improvements and various fixes in this version, although they didn't go through another devel release for the 1.0 branch.

For example, the configuration of the client is now available in a single file, users can import email messages and contact group assignments, advanced LDAP address book functionality has been implemented, and a toggle to switch between HTML and plaintext view has been added.

Also, users are now able to save drafts in the local storage for recovery, the keyboard navigation in the messages list has been improved, the UI has been optimized to work on tablet devices, and an attachment reminder plugin has been added.

Roundcube developers are also reaching out to the community with a new plugin initiative that should bring new functionalities and features to the webmail client.

“With this release, we’d also like to introduce the Roundcube plugins repository at plugins.roundcube.net. This central platform should help you find the right plugins for your Roundcube installation and makes it simple to keep them up-to-date. The installation and update mechanism is based on Composer and Packagist,” the announcement also notes.

Developers are now encouraged to publish their plugins on the new platform, which should, in time, become as important as the client itself. If you want to publish a plugin, the plugins.roundcube.net site has all the information you need.
