The ranking algorithm doesn’t seem to be properly set up

Windows Store is continuously growing and now there are more than 1,600 applications waiting for your download. There are, however, some things to be improved and one of the most important is the ranking system.

Just like it's the case with any other app store out there, users are allowed to rank the downloaded apps, which is obviously the easiest way to create tops and let others find out about five-star products.

The ranking algorithm integrated into Windows Store, however, doesn't seem to work properly, as it doesn't take the number of ratings into consideration.

The issue was revealed by McAkins Online and is perfectly demonstrated in the picture included in this article. An application with a five-star rating will be placed on the first position of its category even if there are other products with more votes and a similar ranking.

In addition, as Windows Store grows up, more and more applications seem to be placed in the wrong category, which makes it a bit more difficult to find the right product.

The best example is the very expensive EMS Surface app we told you about a few days ago. It's included in the “Health and Fitness” category, but since it's just an application developed to help doctors keep track of their patients and appointments, it should be moved to the “Business” category.

Microsoft hasn't commented on the subject so far but, given the fact that Windows 8 isn't yet released and Windows Store is still in beta stage, most of the issues are very likely to be fixed before the official October 26 release date.
