Coming in January

Close after the launch of Fallout 3, Bethesda announced its plans to offer a full game creation kit and three pieces of DLC for the title. The first one to come is Operation: Anchorage that is supposed to arrive in January, followed by an adventure set in Pittsburgh in February and by Broken Steel in March.

Jeff Gardiner, who is the lead producer on Fallout 3, talked to IGN about Operation: Anchorage, saying that the DLC would offer between two and five hours of extra gameplay, depending on the style of the players, and would be accessible at any time if the player left Vault 101.

Basically, the character you are using will enter a simulation similar to the Tranquility Lane one that you must enter during the main quest of the game. Once inside the simulation, you will be taken anything you had access to in the game world and you will have to fight alongside the United States military as they fought to get the Chinese out of Alaska just before the Great War, which devastated humanity and forced people in the Vaults. Bethesda says that the art for the setting has been built from scratch and will look different from what we’ve seen in Fallout 3.

The player will be part of a Strike Team and will have access to armor, weapons and gadgets that are not available in the original Fallout 3. You can play in various ways, emphasizing combat or stealth. A new perk will be offered, probably for liberating Anchorage, and it seems that some of the things gained in the simulation can be taken into the real game world. New Achievements are also ready to be won.

Operation: Anchorage will cost 800 Microsoft Points and Gardiner says that before its launch, Bethesda is getting ready to release a patch addressing various issues related to the game as reported by players.
