The incident occurred at the Philippine Eagle Foundation in Mindanao

Given how committed conservationists are to breeding endangered species in captivity, it sounds ironic, to say the least, that their efforts be undermined by something as simple as a tree branch.

Still, it turns out that having a falling branch kill a very rare animal can sometimes happen. In fact, Mirror tells us that this is precisely how a very rare eagle living in the Philippines has recently lost its life.

The incident occurred at the Philippine Eagle Foundation on the island of Mindanao. The bird was about 15 years old, and was simply hanging around in its cage when the tree branch fell and landed right on top of it.

The eagle was badly crushed, and there was nothing that vets could do to mend its injuries. Hence, the bird, named Arakan, passed away.

Given the fact that just 250 adult Philippine eagles are currently left in the wild, it is no wonder that the news of this bird's death deeply saddened conservationists working to save the species from going extinct.

By the looks of it, the tree branch fell due to heavy rain that hit the conservation center and its surroundings.
