MyArtInfo - a new type of social network

Louise MacBain from Canada decided to create a service which can easily compete with FaceBook although it targets only a limited segment of users. MyArtInfo is a social networking service which aims to bring artists to the website and allow them to share their creations with other Internet consumers from all over the world. At this time, there are no less than 810 registered members with approximately 5,000 creations published on the page, Reuters reported today. MyArtInfo's features are pretty similar with the ones owned by Facebook as this new social networks enable members to communicate through a web-based chat, write blog posts and comment on the works published by the artists.

"With myartinfo people can post for free their art -- not only visual art, but performing arts, film, poetry, sculpture, fashion, architecture and design," Louise MacBain said for Reuters. "The idea is that it becomes a global platform for people to go and show their art."

This is a pretty nice chance to promote your own creations since the traditional social networks such as MySpace and Facebook have millions of users, many of them registering for new account with only one goal in mind: to meet new people and communicate.

"MySpace is great, but this is really honing in on art per se. It is not just about meeting people for the sake of meeting people, it is about sharing your skill and seeing what people think about your work," Robert Romiti, the MyArtInfo designer commented for the same source.

The product is still in beta so you might see some new features very soon. However, you can give it a try and who knows, maybe you'll abandon your MySpace profile and create one on MyArtInfo. Don't worry if you're not an artist because anyone is free to create accounts as long as they are interested in art. "MyArtInfo is not exclusive to artists. Art students, collectors, galleries or anyone interested in contemporary art and artists is invited to join and participate in forums," the product's FAQ explains.
