Unlike smartwatches and fitness bracelets, smart glasses aren’t all that widespread. Of course, there’s the Google Glass and Lenovo and Samsung are rumored to be working on similar products, but they are still in prototype phases and we have no idea when they will become a reality.

Even so, there's plenty to look at. You can leave it to Japan to fill in a consumer niche and you will certainly not be disappointed.

As Japan Trends reports, the FUN’IKI Ambient Glasses might look like your traditional piece of eyewear, but they are a bit smarter than that.

The glasses pair up with your iPhone and relay your notification. When this happens, the color LEDs in the lenses will light up, alerting you that you have received a new message on Facebook.

Users get to choose which color is correlated with what app. For example, your glasses might turn green when you receive a text.

The glasses come with text-to-speech feature, so if you get an email, FUN’IKI can read it out loud to you and you’ll be able to hear it thanks to the speakers embedded in the arms of the glasses.

For the time being, the glasses aren't available for purchase and the project is up gathering funds on Japan’s answer to Kickstarter, but the goal has been reached. Therefore, you should expect to see them arrive on the market as soon as December.

They will sell for $230 / €172 a pop, but if you contribute now, you’ll be able to get them for half a price.
