Many US citizens might be tempted to donate money to a charity to help those affected by hurricane Sandy. However, experts advise people to be extra careful who they give their money to since scammers are highly active these days.

Fraudulent charities are not the only thing you must look out for. The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns residents of the areas affected by hurricane Sandy to be careful about shady home repair offers.

When making donations, the FTC advises you to donate only to organizations you trust, not to ones that have appeared overnight. The Better Business Bureau can help in identifying fakes.

Always demand more information if you’re being solicited to make a donation via phone. Never send cash, and never hand out personal information unless you’re 100% that the charity is legitimate.

As far as repair scams go, always check the contractor’s references and identification, and avoid paying too much money in advance. Also, try to deal only with reputable people from the community.

If you suspect a con, immediately alert authorities.

Complaints against such practices can be submitted to the FTC’s website or by calling 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357).
