FIFA 14, the football simulation title from EA Sports, has taken over the number one position in the United Kingdom video game chart during its first week on sales and seems poised for a long reign at the top.

The game is not a revolutionary addition to the franchise, but it improves the core mechanics, adds a new layer of realism to the experience and improves the hugely popular Ultimate Team mode with a new type of Chemistry interactions.

Second place in the top ten for the week that ended on September 28 goes to Grand Theft Auto V, the open world title from developer Rockstar and publisher Take Two, which had previously topped the chart since it was released.

It will be interesting to see whether the addition of the GTA Online mode this week will allow it to mount a challenge and return to the number one spot.

The Xbox 360 version of Minecraft has seen a solid increase in its own sales in order to take over third spot, according to data coming from UKIE, a climb of three positions when compared to the previous week.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2014, the simulation created by Konami using the new Fox Engine, is at the moment in fourth place, down two, and shows how popular football is among gamers at the moment.

The Last of Us continues to perform well more than four months since launch and currently sits in fifth, while Disney Infinity, which combines real-world toys and virtual experiences, is in sixth.

Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist is in seventh, continuing its slow decline, and Saints Row 4, from Volition and Deep Silver, sits in eight, down four positions over the previous week.

Diablo III on consoles sits in ninth place at the moment, and Rayman Legends is making an impressive comeback from 16 to close down the UK top ten.
