Football fans are falling in love with FIFA, at least judging by sales

Electronic Arts has revealed a rather shocking statistic in regards to the rivalry between its FIFA series and Konami's own Pro Evolution Soccer (PES) one, saying that in the first weekend of availability for both titles, FIFA 12 outsold PES 2012 by a whopping 25:1 ratio.

Like any popular gaming genre, the football simulator one is disputed by many companies, but only EA and Konami can actually brag about their performances, cranking out a new game each year and always getting fans to come back for more.

Now, with both games being released in Europe, where the biggest sales are recorded, EA was quick to highlight a rather surprising statistic. According to the company's Northern Europe boss, Keith Ramsdale, who spoke to GamerZines, FIFA 12 has outsold PES 2012 by a whopping 25:1 ratio, which is even more impressive considering PES used to rule over FIFA a few years ago.

"When you look at Pro Evolution Soccer versus FIFA, only five years ago in the UK PES was outselling FIFA. On its first weekend like-for-like we've just outsold PES by 25 times. That's a sign of the momentum and the fan base and community behind FIFA, and let's be clear, an a [great] game. It's unbelievable."

The sales are even more surprising considering FIFA 12 was already released for two whole weeks before PES 2012 was released in Europe, on October 14. The EA Sports football simulator already set massive sales records during its first week, trumping all other sports games released this year.

Konami still has quite a few aces up its sleeve with the PES series, however, as it still retains the rights from UEFA competitions like the Champions League or Europa League. EA's FIFA, on the other hand, doesn't have such competitions, but, as you can see, manages to attract even more people through features like the Player Impact Engine.

As of right now, EA and Konami are busy releasing updates for their recent titles, while no doubt working already on the new FIFA 13 or PES 2013.
